Mississippi legislators are giving themselves a short spring break.

Members of the House and Senate left the Capitol Thursday and will return late Monday afternoon. Usually, they work for at least a short time on Fridays.

Leaders say the two chambers are ahead of where they need to be with their workload at this point in the three-month session.

There's still some heavy lifting ahead. Lawmakers' biggest task is finishing a state budget of about $5.7 billion for the fiscal year that begins July 1.

The session started January 5 and is scheduled to end April 3.
