The deadline to file for homestead exemption on your property of residence in Mississippi is Apr. 1. It will significantly lower your property tax bill.
To file for the exemption, you have to go by your local county tax assessor's office and fill out paperwork affirming that the property is your primary place of residence.
"To qualify for that savings, you must live in the state of Mississippi," said Lauderdale County Tax Assessor Jimmy Slay. "You must live at the property Jan. 1 of the year you sign, must buy all your car tags in (that county), and you must follow the income tax law in the state of Mississippi. "
If you already have homestead exemption on the house where you live, and there have been no changes, there is no need to file for it again.
