Union Resident Turning 100

In a little more than a week, a Union resident will celebrate her 100th birthday.

The family of Pauline Germany Matthews is planning a big celebration for next weekend.

Matthews was born Mar. 28, 1910.

She shared what she believes is a key to her longevity, based on Exodus 20:12: "Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee."

"I've always believed that God had control of every phase of our lives," said Matthews. "And I was baptized when I was 11 years old and I've always tried to live according to the Bible, honor thy father and mother."

Her memory is remarkably sharp. Newscenter 11 asked Matthews who she thinks has been the best president of her lifetime.

Her answer? Franklin D. Roosevelt, because he brought the country out of the Depression and through most of World War II.
