A former employee of Urology Clinic of Meridian, Beverly Morgan, 31, was sentenced Friday for embezzlement and uttering/forgery in Lauderdale County Circuit Court.
Morgan was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with six years suspended, on both counts, to run concurrently. She will have to serve five years supervised probation and five years unsupervised probation after her release.
Morgan, former office manager for the clinic, was ordered to pay $180,000 in restitution, with $30,000 due immediately.
During the two years that she served as office manager there, the attorney for the clinic, Bill Ready, Jr., says thousands of dollars were stolen through the misuse of credit cards, fraudulent transfers and forged checks.
Even with restitution, Ready says the clinic is still losing a lot of money.
"Big time, because of the taxes and penalties and IRS money and employment taxes that were never paid," said Ready. "IRS taxes and penalties that is owed on that money is rather significant."
"No, it's not enough, but we're just going to take what we can get," said Leslie Phillips of the Urology Clinic of Meridian. "But ultimately we wanted jail time and that is what we got."
Morgan asked the judge if she could return home this weekend to get her affairs in order. The judge granted that request and ordered her to return back to court at 9 a.m. Monday, Mar. 29.
At that time, Morgan will be placed in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections. If she does not return Monday, the judge says he will review her sentence.
