Jobless Rate at 12 Percent

Mississippi's February unemployment rate stood at 12 percent, decreasing a tenth of a percentage point from 12.1 percent in January, but continuing well over the national rate of 10.4 percent.

The state Department of Employment Security released figures Tuesday.

Unemployment ranged from a high of 23.3 percent in Noxubee County to 7.9 percent in Rankin County.

MDES says 22 of Mississippi's 82 counties posted unemployment rates less than or equal to the state's rate of 12 percent. Rates decreased or remained unchanged in 60 counties.

Rates for other counties in east central Mississippi:
Kemper 13.3%
Lauderdale 12%
Clarke 13.5%
Jasper 13.4%
Newton 11.5%
Neshoba 12.5%
Wayne 14.1%
Winston 22.1%
Scott 8.7%

    Thank goodness the stimulus bill passed or else unemployment would have gotten over 8.7%. oh wait.
