The tough economy has caused many to save money rather than spend it.
However, people are still paying money for a garden full of flowers and vegetables.
A Lauderdale County business owner said she believes the success of plant nurseries stems from the stress relief and joy gardening brings.
Despite the tough economic times, she says this spring is no different from any other.
"The weather impacted us a little, but now that the sun is out and shining and everything is springy and pretty, people have been out in droves buying and making their homes gorgeous," said Liz Moore, owner of Plant the Earth.
Spring and summer are the peak seasons for plant sales.
Moore said the key to keeping a small business booming is a good environment and an inventory of items that people will always buy, but can't always find at larger franchises.
