Boil Water Notice Issued for Meridian

It has been a rough day for many stores in Meridian. A water line break in the Bonita Lakes area has interrupted water service to Bonita Lakes Mall and several restaurants. City crews are working to make the repair to the 16-inch water line.

A boil water notice has been issued for the affected area. It includes all city of Meridian water customers south of Interstate 20/59 and east of Virginia Drive, extending to the east side of Bonita Lakes at Lake Drive and south to the back side of Bonita Lakes Mall.

This is primarily the Bonita Lakes Mall, Meridian Crossroads Shopping Center and Sam's Club areas.

Those affected include restaurants in the mall food court, as well as nail and hair salons. As soon as mall management learned of the water break, it let tenants know. Some went out and bought gallons of water and soft drinks.

"It has been a slow day for us," said Gilbert Vitela, manager of Las Fuentes in the mall. "All that water. We had to go into Wal-Mart and bring in all that water. It's just not working out for us. We're going to have to close early. It's going to cost us money."

The water line was apparently cut while a private contractor was working on repairs to the dam at Bonita Lakes Park.

Those residences and businesses currently without water are primarily in the immediate vicinity of Bonita Lakes Mall. However, because of a loss of water pressure in the entire area, all customers in that area should boil water vigorously for at least one minute until the notice is lifted. The city estimates the water should be determined to be safe to drink sometime Friday.

To Robert Martin- Maybe you should specialize in grammer and not construction. Moreover, if the backfill was giving way, why wasn't the water main properly supported by your crew to prevent failure?
