Logo Chosen for Golden Wings Over Meridian

Even though the Golden Wings Over Meridian air show is a year away, preparations are already being made.

NAS Meridian hosted a contest among high school students to come up with a logo for the event.

The top five artists were recognized Wednesday during a luncheon at the base.

Ashley Jenkins of West Lauderdale, who takes marketing and management classes at Ross Collins Vocational Center, is the overall winner.

"I feel amazing. It's an honor to me," said Jenkins. "I've never won anything in my life. And this is the career I want to pursue when I'm older. So this really means a lot to me, to win."

"We're part of the community," said school liaison Cynthia McDonald. "We shop in the community. Our kids go to the community schools. And so it's important that we foster that relationship between the community and the base."

Entries were also submitted from Lamar, Meridian, Newton and Enterprise.

Golden Wings Over Meridian will be Mar. 26-27, 2011, and will feature the Navy's Blue Angels.

The air show is a celebration of NAS Meridian's 50th anniversary and the 100th year of naval aviation. NAS Meridian was commissioned in July 1961.
