Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour says it will probably be mid-May when he joins a multi-state lawsuit challenging a federal health care overhaul. More than a dozen other states have already joined the federal suit filed by Florida.

Republican Barbour originally asked Democratic Attorney General Jim Hood to represent Mississippi. Hood said Friday that Barbour could hire a private attorney to do the work.

Barbour sent Hood a letter Tuesday saying attorney Michael Wallace of Jackson will represent Mississippi at no public expense.

Wallace often represents Republicans and was nominated to a federal appeals court in 2006 by then-President George W. Bush. Wallace withdrew his nomination. He was opposed by the same Democrats and groups who opposed the nomination of Judge Charles Pickering.
