Students Step Up for Community

The city of Meridian is getting some sprucing up, thanks to a group of students.

Mayor Cheri Barry issued a proclamation Monday declaring April Keep Meridian-Lauderdale County Beautiful Month.

"Whenever you have a clean community, people want to come and live here and they want to come and bring businesses here," said Barry. "How important is that to our community? Extremely important because we want to build Meridian like she's never been built before."

As part of the day, kindergarten through 12th grade students from Calvary Christian School performed community service at sites throughout the city.

"Service is part of what we try to instill into our children," said headmaster Tom Clayton. "I'd really like for them to understand that the community is a part of them, as well as they are a part of the community."

In addition to painting and planting flowers at Highland Park, students also planted flowers at the library, visited a local nursing home, and volunteered at LOVE's Kitchen.
