Authorities say a Lawrence County deputy may have suffered a heart attack before his vehicle crashed.
Sheriff Joel Thames says 53-year-old Tommy Kirkland was pronounced dead at the scene of Saturday's wreck near the Topeka community.
County Coroner Sidney Fortenberry told the Brookhaven Daily Leader that a preliminary autopsy indicated a possibility of a heart attack before the wreck. He says he is awaiting the final report.
Thames says Kirkland's wife and another passenger were not seriously hurt.
Kirkland was the head correctional officer at the Lawrence County Jail. He had been in law enforcement since the 1970s.
