Officials with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department say medical staff began CPR when Christopher Powell tried to commit suicide.
Powell was arrested May 3 for a DUI, possession of cocaine and marijuana, and simple assault on an officer.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is now documenting the events that happened, as is standard procedure.
"Any time a situation like this happens, the correctional staff themselves have a grieving period," said Sollie. "And we are currently caring for those individuals who work for the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department. "
Powell was 23. He was housed by himself in a cell.
