Military members, friends, and family gathered at the Lauderdale County Courthouse to honor America's fallen heroes in a Memorial Day tribute.
The service included a twenty-one gun salute, the reading of the fallen, and words from a young Marine captain who spoke about the true meaning behind Memorial Day.
"I've had friends and acquaintances that have given their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. You have to set aside the day. It is not just another day," said Capt. Aaron Schetzler, the guest speaker. "It is not just a day to have a barbecue. You do need to pause and remember those guys that came before us, or that you served with, and remember what it is that we're fighting for."
The Memorial Day/Veterans Day Committee hopes to add another segment to the wall in front of the courthouse for the brave men and women from Lauderdale County who died while fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.
