Downtown Cleanup Set

The Alliance for Downtown is calling for volunteers to join in a downtown Meridian cleanup, to make sure the area looks its best.

Downtown is the site for the opening of the State Games of Mississippi and the Juneteenth celebration the following weekend.

"It does something else when you get people together. You build some synergy," said Kenny Watts, board president of the Alliance for Downtown. "You generate more interest in other possibilities for downtown cooperation. It also helps people to see just how pretty your downtown is when you have out of towners, or folks who aren't downtown every day, come and spend time for several hours walking the sidewalks and working with other people."

The cleanup will be done Saturday, 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The opening ceremonies will be Friday, June 18. Juneteenth will be marked June 19.
