Cleaning Downtown Meridian

Some people spend their Saturday mornings jogging. Some people do yard work. And then others clean up their communities.

This morning a group of local volunteers helped with the appearance of downtown Meridian by doing what they call 'a clean sweep'. Volunteers often clean the downtown area, but this cleaning session was for a specific reason.

"We're getting ready for all of our guests to come in for the State Games Opening Ceremonies and for Juneteenth. We've had volunteers from the all of the local downtown banks and local churches and other groups associated particularly in the downtown area," says Liz Dudley, the Chairman of the Mainstreet Meridian Design Committee.

The idea to clean up came as a result of a joint effort.

"It came as a joint effort between the Downtown Meridian Alliance and the Mainstreet Board and the work groups that came together in an effort to cleanup downtown and get ready for two of the main events that bring the most people to town."

Organizers say there were approximately thirty to forty volunteers helping today.
