Lauderdale County tax collector, Stanley Shannon, has chosen to begin drawing his state retirement, even though he is not retiring.
But because he's drawing his retirement while working, Shannon will only collect 25% of his current salary.
"I've worked enough years to where my retirement will be approximately 75% of my present salary," said Shannon. "And this, like I said earlier, will save the taxpayers of Lauderdale County $54,000 a year. And I'll be doing the same thing, except part of my money, 3/4 of my money, will be coming from the state retirement system."
The 70-year-old Shannon said it's advantageous for him to begin collecting his retirement now because he will get a 13th check each year that's a percentage of his retirement income.
But Shannon wants to keep working, and intends to be a candidate for reelection in 2011.
