The Mississippi Department of Health has commended the city of Meridian for adopting a smoking ban for public places.
A certificate was given to Mayor Cheri Barry today at Bonita Lakes Park.
The city's ordinance took effect in February.
The presentation was made during a meeting honoring volunteers with the Tobacco-Free Coalition of Lauderdale and Newton Counties.
"We try to, more or less, acknowledge our persons who have given of themselves in promoting the dangers of tobacco use," said Sabrina Wilson of the Tobacco-Free Coalition. "But also at the same time of promoting the importance of the state of Mississippi to implement a smoke-free ordinance."
The Tobacco-Free Coalition also saluted its board members who served in fiscal year 2010.
