Applicants must first pass a physical fitness test that simulates activities that may be required of a firefighter at any time on the job.
Fire Chief Anthony Clayton said he hopes to hire at least seven rookie firefighters this year. Those who pass the physical exam must then pass a written and oral test as well.
"We had 44 to show up," said Clayton. "We've had a few that didn't make it. I'm hoping that we have a high percentage to pass, and then a high percentage to pass the oral. Then we'll have a viable list for a year."
Clayton says turnover rates are high and many quit after dealing with actual fires and injured victims.
One person who did complete the physical exam successfully was our own meteorologist and reporter Jessica Dealy.
Newscenter 11 will air her series on the tough and important job of firefighters in July.
