The Meridian Rotary Club had the mayor of Tupelo as its guest Wednesday.
Jack Reed, Jr., said Tupelo and Meridian share common problems.
For one, he said it's a tough time economically for all municipalities in the state.
Reed also reacted to the good news that Toyota has resumed its plan to build cars at a new plant near Tupelo.
"We've got a high unemployment rate up there and this will mean life-changing opportunities for 2,000 workers at the Toyota plant itself, and then another 2,000 in the tier 1 suppliers," said Reed. "So relief and joy and appreciation."
Reed says hiring is expected to start later this year, with the first Corolla built in Tupelo coming off the assembly line in September 2011.
