MPD Investigates Homicide

The Meridian Police Department is investigating a homicide that happened in the early morning hours Friday.

Officials say 28-year-old Latonya Gowdy from Lauderdale was found lying on the sidewalk at Highway Village Apartments in Meridian, around 12:50 a.m.

"Apparently, she was shot twice in the abdomen area," said Assistant Police Chief Jeff Lewis.

She was taken to the hospital and died during surgery. The body will be sent to Jackson for an autopsy.

Officers also say two other individuals, a 31-year-old man and a 30-year-old female, were also shot during the same incident. Neighbors said they are husband and wide, and lived at the apartment complex. They were transported to the hospital in a private vehicle, treated for non-life threatening injuries and released.

"I heard it. I just hit the floor," said Erica Sanders, who lives next door to the couple who survived. "My doors were closed. I didn't know anything. I think it's just sad of what's going on in this community."

The names of the injured were not immediately released by authorities. The MPD did not release any information about possible suspects.

"All I can do is just stay in the house, like I normally do, because ain't no bullet got no name on it," said Sanders.

Detectives asked that anyone with information contact the Meridian Police Department Criminal Investigations Division at 601-485-1893, 601-485-1859 or Crimestoppers at 601-485-1860.
