ABC Cancels Soaps

ABC has canceled two long-running soap operas, "All My Children" and "One Life to Live".

There's been a lot of this kind of action (here, between Susan Lucci and Cameron Mathison) since ABC introduced All My Children back in 1970. The network announced Thursday that it's canceling AMC and One Life to Live.

'All My Children' and 'One Life to Live' will end their long runs on daytime television, but not without leaving a legacy of soap-actors-turned-stars behind.

ABC announced Thursday that the daytime dramas will air their final episodes in September and January, respectively.

In their place, the network will debut two new daytime programs: 'The Chew', a program about food news and trends, and 'The Revolution', about health and lifestyle transformations.

Susan Lucci, who has played Erica Kane for over four decades, may be the biggest star on 'All My Children' and one of soaps' biggest icons.

"It' has been a fantastic journey," the 64-year-old actress said in a statement Thursday. "I loved playing Erica Kane and working with [show creator] Agnes Nixon and all the incredible people involved with 'All My Children'. I'm looking forward to all kinds of new and exciting opportunities."

Lucci won the daytime Emmy for playing Erica in 1999 after being passed over 18 times.

Kelly Ripa, another star who came from 'All My Children', told she felt "heartsick" when she heard the news.

"This is like losing a member of your family," Ripa, now host of 'Regis and Kelly', said in a statement. "'All My Children' was more than a job; it was my family. It was there that I met my husband [Mark Consuelos]; it was there when my first two children were born; it was there where I met many of my life-long friends. It was the greatest training ground ever. I feel heart sick."

Indeed, 'All My Children', on since 1970, and 'One Life to Live', on since 1968, launched the careers of some of today's biggest stars, including Sarah Michelle Gellar, Michelle Trachtenberg, Melissa Leo, Josh Duhamel, Eva LaRue, Christian Slater, Rosie O'Donnell, Kim Delaney and Amanda Seyfried.

Do you think ABC should cancel 'All My Children' and 'One Life to Live'?

I stopped watching soaps when my children were small. It was too addictive & was too racy & trashy. I'm so glad that ABC has stepped up to dish the soap (pardon the pun). One small leap for mankind. If you watch them faithfully, then you have no life at all. Get out & get a life. I did. You may never know when you will be struck with something that will have you flat of your back & that is all you can do or, heaven forbid, you die... Then you will have missed out on some of the most precious time in your life. Don't live in some fantasy world written by people who are making millions because you watch "faithfully"...faithfully live your life as you don't have another day left, for you don't know if you do or not.

I think it is crazy to be canceling all of the soaps. I grew up with them and still enjoy them everyday. I do not and will not watch all these shows they have put on in their place. I have these kind of channels on my tv. If I wanted to watch them I could have and I chose to continue to watch my soaps because they are good. Please stop taking what is good off tv. We have enough talk shows!!! We have enough how to show!!! I am sick of those!!!!

I have watched "All My Children" all my life and "One Life to Live". The world is rapidly changing not many people sit and watch the soaps during their regular hours, I have observed my friends that used to watch soaps faithfully on the Soap Network, back off from watching their old favorites in the evenings. When my son was around 5 or 6 he asked me; "Why they call the show All My Children? I never see any children on the show." We still laugh about that. Thad and his many girlfriends and wives we all came of age at the same time and now we are in the prime of life each making changes according to the times. Angie and Jessie, I will miss All My Children. I will miss watching Vicki/Niki and Jessica/Tess switch back and forth between personalities, who knows One Life to Live might be the show that laid the foundation for my current career aspirations for Counseling. I will miss them now they go the way of the Edge of Night, believe it or not I used to watch every soap almost daily.
