August Earth's Bounty Festival a Boom for Local Vendors

Cars lined Front Street as hundreds of people came out for the summer's third Earth's Bounty Festival at Union Station today. About thirty vendors from the twin states came out with everything from peaches, apples, and grapes, to kettle corn, homemade ice cream, and seasonings. I caught up with Shirley Ray from Butler, Alabama who does just about everything you can imagine with fresh fruit, and she hopes that everything she brought sells out.

"Well, I brought between 25 and 30 boxes, and there's 12 jars to a box."

It was a very hot and humid August day, but that didn't deter people from getting their local produce. The festival was so busy, that Mathis Peaches and Produce had to have another truckload of fruit brought in to keep up with the customers' demand, and although farmer's markets aren't their primary source of sales, they say Earth's Bounty gives them a chance to get out in the community.

"We have our own produce market, so we mainly sell out of our store, but we come out to the Earth's Bounty Festival which is the first Saturday of every month and we do very well."

With three more festivals scheduled for this season in September, October, and November, the Meridian Main Street Association is already planning the festivities for next year.

"We'll pick back up again next year, even bigger and better than ever."
