United Blood Services' Neighborhood Hero Blood Drive is being held Wednesday through Friday.
Each day from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., donors may give at Meridian's Temple Theatre.
UBS is hoping to meet the need of area hospitals for the summer. The need for blood never takes a vacation. It takes about 30 to 45 minutes of your time to become a neighborhood hero.
The goal is to have 100 heroes each day, because it takes a lot of blood to meet the supply of local hospitals.
"We need about 250 pints a day to supply the hospitals that we provide for," said Debra Barrett, UBS donor recruitment representative. "So it is very, very important that if you're able to, to please come out and donate."
If you don't have a lot of time to donate, you can make sure you are in at a convenient time by scheduling an appointment.
"Want to encourage appointments," said Barrett. "Appointments are honored; walk-ins are definitely welcome. If you schedule an appointment, you get an extra hundred points for scheduling that appointment and keeping that appointment, so you can use those points for our reward store."
With the heat we've been having the past couple of days, the Neighborhood Heroes Blood Drive is a way to escape the heat and help save a life.
For every pint that's donated, officials say three lives can be saved. United Blood Services is helping to sweeten the deal by offering some great giveaways from their sponsors.
"We have got tons of sponsors," Barrett said. "We've got Ed Chaney Tire; we've got Pampered Bodies, K-Salon, Outback, Red Lobster, Lauderdale County Farm Supply, Yoo-Yoo Yogurt, Sake Sushi, just several, several sponsors."
Door prizes will be given away each hour as well as food from several local restaurants. A grand prize from Woodstock Furniture will also be given away.
