Jasper County authorities are asking for the public's help in tracking down the suspect or suspects in a brutal murder and assault.
A month after the attack and things are very quiet outside the house the two victims shared. It was 5:30 in the evening on March 31st when the gruesome discovery was made. Investigators say both 62-year-old George McCullum and his 64-year-old brother, Charles McCullum, had been brutally beaten with an unidentified object.
Investigators say the two had been left for dead inside their house just outside Heidelberg. Deputies say it was hours after the attack that both were discovered by a relative. According to investigators, the younger brother died from his injuries. A month after the attack and the older brother is still in intensive care.
'At this time we have no motive,' says newly elected Jasper County Sheriff Keith Murphy. ' We have approximately 10 people that have been brought in for questioning. We're just asking the community, if they saw anything strange in that community or even in the weeks prior to that, to just let us know. We have leads that we are running down, but anything we can get would surely help us in this case.'
It was last summer when Sheriff Murphy says another resident in the small Oak Bowery Community was murdered. Maurice McDonald was the victim. A preliminary investigation revealed that the 26-year-old was likely shot and killed over money. So far, an arrest has also not been made in that case.
'We don't know if there' a connection. We're running every lead the public has.'
In the case involving the two brothers, Sheriff Murphy says some evidence was collected from the scene and sent to the state crime lab. He says investigators are still waiting for the results.
'We need information from people who might have seen who was with these brothers. We just need to connect the dots and get this solved.'
A cash reward is being offered in the case. The number to call is the Jasper County tip line at (601) 764-3784.
