A burglary suspect was recently found asleep at East Kemper Elementary School in Scooba. Authorities say everyone was surprised, including the suspect.
52-year-old Leroy Avery is charged with breaking into the building and attempting to steal a number of items.
Authorities were alerted about the suspect when a school employee called at 7:30 a.m.
Sheriff James Moore says he found Avery asleep on a couch outside the principal's office.
"He was in a dead sleep when I woke him," said Moore. "In talking to him, he says he had been out to a club drinking and I guess he was tired."
Moore says the suspect had gathered together computer, phone and radio equipment.
The sheriff says the items that the suspect was attempting to steal were all taken from the cafeteria, bagged up and left by a gate outside the school.
"There was a computer system and radio system bagged up and taken out," Moore said. "It appears that he put them down to go back and retrieve other property."
Avery's bond was set at $5,000.
