California Students Visit Chaney's Grave

Three bus loads of students from California came to the grave of slain civil rights worker James Chaney on Wednesday.

About 140 students and chaperones made the trip, many of them from Inspire High School of the Arts in Chico, California.

It's called Sojourn to the Past. The 10-day journey travels through five southern states exploring the civil rights era.

James Chaney, from Meridian, was one of the three civil rights workers murdered near Philadelphia, during Freedom Summer 1964.

"This has been a great opportunity to not only learn of our history and the great heroes who have given so much, who have sacrificed so much so that we can, of course, have rights that all Americans expect to have," according to Alberto Mojico with Sojourn to the Past.

The initiative has been given the nation's highest honor for after school programs in the arts and humanities by First Lady Michelle Obama.
