Cancer Survivors Stand Strong during Lauderdale County Relay for Life

Meridian, Miss. Cancer survivors were united as they walked through Lauderdale County's Ag Center to celebrate their greatest victory in life and that is overcoming cancer.

"I received my cancer because I used cigarettes a long time ago," cancer survivor Michael Longmeier said. "And I got caught eight years after I quit. So, I wasn't angry with anybody when I found out I had cancer, except myself."

"Being a part of relay every year really brings it all home," cancer survivor Bo Hawkins said. "It shows the progress that's been made over the years in cancer research. For myself, had it not been for events like relay, I would probably not be standing here."

While the fight against cancer is a serious one, the people gathered at the Ag Center chose to put a fun and positive spin on that fight. By fellowshipping with those they know and don't know, enjoying food of all sorts, and participating in various games and activities. At the end of the day, we're all impacted by cancer in one way or another.

"Because all the money raised here goes for a cure against cancer," relay specialist Jenn Northam said. "And that benefits all of us. There's very few of us who have not been touched by this disease. And by contributing to this event and participating, you can take a step in the fight against cancer and hopefully we can find a cure one day and better treatment."

Cancer survivors and their loved ones say this is a fight they will not be backing down from any time soon.

"But do not ever, ever give up because that's how you beat it," That's really how you beat it," Longmeier added.

Relay for Life organizers have not revealed what the fundraising goal is for 2014.
