Celebrate Arts! at Local School

Students at Poplar Springs Elementary had the opportunity to learn about and participate in a variety of art forms Thursday morning.

The 4th Annual Celebrate Arts! program is held thanks to a matching grant from the Meridian Council of the Arts and allows students to meet local artists and learn about their craft.

With the Jimmie Rodgers Festival this weekend, it's fitting that the students at Poplar Springs learned about music and other types of art.

Unlike many other art venues, this event allows students the chance to be one-on-one with an artist and see what goes in to making a masterpiece.

"Well, they have the opportunity to be up close and personal with an artist," said Clair Huff, director of the arts initiative project. "And they may realize that that artist or that art form is something they can make a career choice out of."

Not only does Celebrate Art! cause students to look forward, it also is important to their daily classroom instruction.

"We believe it is very important to integrate the arts. It engages the child," Huff said. "It pulls them into learning. When you learn something through the arts, it becomes an emotional experience, and it is forever yours."

The Lauren Rogers Museum in Laurel was also present. The museum has done events with the Meridian School District before, but this event exposes students to everything the museum has to offer.

"Well, we really want to expose them to as many different kinds of art as we can," said Angie King of the Lauren Rogers Museum. "And also, we want them to know that there's a museum in Laurel, that they can come and visit us as well, and just to let them know that art is everywhere and to appreciate all different kids of art."

Students also got the chance to learn part of the dance to the musical, 'Footloose'.
