City officials Monday broke ground for a new fire station in Meridian.
Station #9 will be located on Briarwood Road West at Highway 39, to serve the most recently annexed area.
The city is currently partnering with Lauderdale County and the Northeast Volunteer Fire Department to provide fire protection, which is also crucial for the city's fire rating and residents' insurance rates.
"It has been a 5-year project," said Fire Chief Anthony Clayton."But since the mayor's got in, she has pushed it and we've got it done."
"The county and the city have worked very closely together in the protection of our citizens until we can get this new building built," said Mayor Cheri Barry. "I'm so grateful to Northeast Lauderdale and their volunteer fire department in housing our men and women until we have station nine built."
The city has targeted a completion date for February 2013.
