The Meridian City Council is considering getting on board with the idea of a regional water authority.

That was a topic of discussion at a work session this week. A presentation was made recommending the move.

Mayor Cheri Barry says she supports the idea because it would make the entire area more attractive to businesses.

If the authority were formed, then a board would be assembled to manage water for residents and businesses within the region.

"It's a regional partnership and so we start with the council in the City of Meridian and then branch out to other communities," said Barry. "Other areas like Southaven and many on the coast have done things similar and it's really a way to grow your community."

Barry said she believes a water authority could help the city meet Department of Environmental Quality regulations. The city has already faced fines for not meeting certain regulations
