Lauderdale County, Miss. You can expect to see extra law enforcement patrols on the roads over the next couple of weeks, in conjunction with the Memorial Day weekend.
Local law enforcement gathered at Dumont Plaza Wednesday to announce the annual Click It or Ticket campaign.
It's a national effort to remind people to buckle up. The simple message, if you're not wearing a seat belt, you can expect to get a ticket.
"Seat belts are uncomfortable," said Greg Crain of the Meridian Police Department. "Some people claim they mess up their clothes. But would you rather have wrinkled clothes, or would you rather possibly die in a fatal crash?"
Law enforcement officials say there were 17 fatalities in the local area last year and 14 of the individuals were not wearing seat belts.
The campaign will run from May 20 to June 2.
