Community Shred Day Saturday

Individuals have some help this weekend in preventing identity theft.

The MSU Extension Service is a partner in holding community shred days around the state. The Meridian event is Saturday, from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Bonita Wal-Mart, 1733 2nd Street South.

It's to make people aware of the importance of identity theft and promote consumer protection.

Officials say individuals may bring up to five bags of sensitive documents to be shredded. Businesses are not eligible for this free service.

"We want you to bring your sensitive documents, up to five large bags and we will shred it on site for free," said Susan Cosgrove of the MSU Extension Service.

The Mississippi Attorney General's Office, the Secretary of State's Office, the Better Business Bureau of Mississippi, ShredIT, BancorpSouth and CredAbility, a non-profit consumer credit counseling group are partnering in offering the shred days.
