C Spire has selected nine Mississippi cities to receive its 1 Gig Fiber to the Home Internet service.
The Ridgeland-based company says the initiative gives homes in Mississippi a chance for Internet speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second, about 100 times the average speed.
The company says the cities are: Batesville, Clinton, Corinth, Hattiesburg, Horn Lake, McComb, Quitman, Ridgeland and Starkville.
C Spire says 33 Mississippi communities applied for the Internet service.
The company say Monday's announcement is the first phase of C Spire's Fiber to the Home program. The company plans for a statewide deployment of the service.
Quitman Mayor Eddie Fulton says it's an unbelievable opportunity to create a network becoming the most technologically-advanced small city in the state.
C Spire said it hopes to have the first city connected by sometime in 2014.
The company is already offering high-speed, high-bandwidth connections to schools and businesses.
