DART Team Success

The Meridian Police Department launched their Direct Action Response Team, or "DART" back on May 31st to target areas of the city that have seen a spike in crime. Captain Wade Johnson with the department who works very closely with the DART Team says that the team uses various methods to determine where they need to step up patrols.

"They've been following up on information that we receive from the public and they also follow up on information that is initiated by what our patrol officers and detectives see out on the street."

A rise in the number of burgarlies, break-ins, and thefts have been reported in a historic area in the western part of the city, and the team is working to bring that part of Meridian back up.

"They've really been focusing on places like the Highland Park area because it's very important for us to bring back a sense of safety and security."

Instead of having just one or two team members on duty 24/7, Johnson says that they work better together.

"They are a team and we feel that we can address a problem a lot easier with a saturation of patrol effort."

The countless hours of work seem to be paying off because crime rates in the areas the team has been working have dropped."

"We feel like it's been very successful. The immediate future, until things really just change is to keep going like we've been going."
