Deadline Looming for Property Taxes

The deadline to pay off any delinquent property taxes is Friday, August 24. If you owe taxes from 2010 and 2011, you will need to pay the 2010 taxes first.

Stanley Shannon, Lauderdale County Tax Collector, says, "Both. If they didn't pay it last year, it will still be in the sale even though they owe last year and this year, but if they want to pay the last year's taxes, they'll have to pay it before they pay the current taxes."

If you are delinquent on your taxes, and you cannot pay them off by the 24th, it's important that you do not show up to the sale on the 27th and try and bid on your property."

Brandi Coghlan, deputy tax collector, tells us, "If they do not get them paid by the 24th, which is the deadline to get them paid before they go to the sale, they do not need to come to the tax sale to bid on their own taxes. They need to just wait until around October and go down to the Chancery Clerk's Office and redeem them down there and that will get them caught back up. It will cause them problems if they bid on their own personal taxes."

If you want to bid on a property, you can sign up to do so now.

"To be a bidder, all you have to do and come down and fill out a W-9 form," says Coghlan. "It's better if you go ahead and come in before the tax sale up until the 24th, but if you wait until the day of the sale, that's fine too. It's a real simple form, and then they come that morning and actually sign in and get their bidder number."

If your property is sold at the sale, you will have two years to redeem it before it transfers. The sale will be in the boardroom of the County Annex Building on the 27th starting at 8:30am.
