Decatur, Miss. East Central Community College will be making changes to its campus soon, making use of a federal grant and 20% local matching funds.
Transportation Commissioner Dick Hall presented a $92,000 check to the board of directors and President Billy Stewart Tuesday in Decatur.
The money will be used to design and construct pedestrian walkways, bicycle paths, handicap-accessible curbing, and enhanced lighting for safety.
"We want to be accessible to all students," said Stewart. "So that this project will also allow our south campus to be more readily accessible by individuals of disability."
"It's funds that otherwise they had no way of obtaining," said Hall. "These are funds that are set aside by Congress to use for non-motorized transportation projects."
Hall said the added benefit of the campus upgrades will be that the college is better-connected to the community. The work is scheduled to begin this fall.
