ECCC Breaks Ground on Project

East Central Community College in Decatur is expanding.

The college broke ground Tuesday on renovations for Cross Hall that will add classroom space and upgrade the campus.

Outgoing president, Dr. Phil Sutphin says the addition of new, larger classrooms and amenities has been part of the master plan for a while.

"Enrollment growth at the college has exceeded the capacity of the current facility. It has been here six decades or so," said Sutphin. "And we need the extra capacity. This will handle the current students plus allow us to expand in the future."

"We're going to add four new classrooms to the building," said science division chairman Kurt Skipper. "There'll be two auditorium style, lecture, tier classrooms, and then there'll be two just flat classrooms but larger classrooms."

The $3 million renovation is expected to be finished by the summer of 2013.
