Sumter County, Ala. Five pilots in training at Naval Air Station Meridian were involved in a crash early Sunday in Sumter County, Ala.
The crash happened at 3:55 a.m. south of York on Interstate 20/59. It involved an SUV and an unoccupied, parked U-Haul truck.
The Alabama Department of Public Safety says the two people who died were passengers Patrick Drury and Kyle McArthur, both 25.
Three people were injured: the driver, 24-year-old Kyle Webber, Brian Goss, 25, and 23-year-old Blaine Lander.
NAS base commander, Capt. Charles Moore, said it's a blow for the tight-knit Navy community.
"Clearly we're all deeply saddened and taken aback by this loss of life," said Moore. "But, as we always do in the military, we rally together, provide resources to those who are particularly affected, and do everything we can to ensure that the survivors are well taken care of as well as the families of those we lost."
Drury was originally from Alexandria, Va. McArthur was from Coronado, Calif. Both men graduated from the Naval Academy in 2011, before beginning their pilot training and coming to NAS Meridian.
