Federal Courtroom to Officially Close

Washington, D.C.

Legislation being sent to President Obama officially closes Meridian's historic federal courtroom. The bill passed the U.S. Senate Wednesday.

Federal court officials stopped using the courtroom last year as a cost saving measure. It's located on the second floor of the U.S. Post Office in downtown Meridian.

That courtroom was the location for the trial of Ku Klux Klansmen charged with violating the civil rights of Michael Schwerner, James Chaney and Andrew Goodman. The trio was murdered in 1964 in Neshoba County.

The closure applies only to the courtroom. It does not affect the building itself or operation of the post office.
