Friday is the last day Mississippi homeowners may apply for homestead exemption this year.
The actual deadline is April 1. However, because that's Sunday and county offices will be closed, residents are being reminded to apply by Mar. 30.
"The main reason is that it reduces their taxes," said Tax Assessor James Rainey. "And we have the regular homestead which ranges up to $300. Then the most significant one is for people who are 65 or disabled, this goes to $7,500 assessed evaluation on their home and it can really reduce their taxes."
To qualify for homestead exemption, the requested property must be your primary residence.
The deadline is for new homeowners to file or for people who need to change their status.
