Meridian, Miss. Girls at Meridian High School learned a little about the world of engineering Wednesday.
Mississippi Power sponsored the first iCan Girls in Engineering Camp, as a part of the MHS science, technology, engineering and mathematics program (STEM).
The young women learned about the science involved in making shoes, lip gloss, and bath beads, among other things.
Guest speaker Jackie Blakley says it's appropriate a day after President Obama signed an order addressing unequal pay for women that they are teaching local young women about higher-paying careers.
"You could get a four-year engineering degree and what kind of money you could be making as soon as you get out of school," said Blakley. "We're being very transparent and letting them know this is a very good way to become independent and make a good living for themselves. "
The students were able to show off their creations and each was presented a certificate at the end of the day.
