Tuesday was the first day the Mississippi Highway Patrol was open to offer concealed-carry permits since the devastating shootings in Connecticut. And the building couldn't even hold the response.
While the usual turnout for permits is around 20 to 30, almost 100 did so Tuesday, the largest number the office has ever seen at one time.
Many attribute that to an increased need for protection after the tragedy in Newtown, as well as a surge in local crime rates.
"With all the people acting crazy, and the shootings and stuff, and being in a business, it's good to have just a cover-me and be safe and cover-me from any dangers or anything," said Casey Shumaker of Decatur.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol is open Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. to accept applications to obtain a concealed carry permit.
