Heated Debate on WTOK

The House 83 seat in the Mississippi legislature provides representation for residents in Lauderdale and Clarke Counties.

This year three men are out to win that seat in Jackson. Incumbent Republican Greg Snowden, Democrat Gary Houston, and Independent Sam Thompson.

Sunday evening all three men were featured on WTOK's "On the Record" and traded some heated words.

Sam Thompson made it clear early on in the show that he believes Snowden has not been productive throughout his three terms in Jackson.

"I see where you've been serving on committees all along, and not a whole lot has really come out of that," Thompson told Snowden on the show.

"What are you speaking of?," asked Snowden.

"Chairing committees."

"Sam, I don't chair any committees. There is no Republican in the House that chairs a committee, the good news is that is going to change in January."

Another debate was sparked with the subject of the committee in Jackson that is analyzing the state's teacher retirement system.

"I understand when a committee is implemented it's to study how you can either make it better, or how you can cut something out of that particular area," said Democratic candidate Gary Houston.

Houston and Thompson continued to push the incumbent on the issues up to the end of the broadcast.

If you want to vote for Mr. Houston or Mr. Thompson, then do it. But stop using the pitiful excuse that Mr. Snowden is after the PERS check. That is twisted rumors. Find out the facts before you start accusing. Mr. Snowden has seniority, and is a well respected Representative for all of Lauderdale County. If you want to elect a person just because "he'll do something for me", then that is selfish and in this case probably racial. Bottom line, Mr. Snowden is the best man for the job at this time, with what's going on in our Country.

I think that Snowden has waited too long to try and do something about district 83. He has not been seen in any community to even offer his concerns or even attempt to know what is going on in the lower class communities of district 83. Rev. Gary Houston's face has been seen in every community and has been even before the election so that's why I'm voting Houston! My grandmother needs her 13th check and that is very selfish for Representatives to even consider bothering elderly people white or black. Their pockets are not as big as the politicians.

Last time I checked, the black community was just one community among others. And, really, what is the black "community?" Does being black completely disqualify one from other communities? I live in the Zero community, am a part of the working class community, young and married community, small child community, middle class community, likes yard sales community....I mean, just because I'm white or black or Native American, or Asian or Mexican, does that exclude me from benefiting from my many other interests or groups? People can be described by many different characteristics, and only those with agendas or simple minds see other people as only being a part of one "community."

If Thompson and Houston had a real platform and really knew of which they speak, they would not have to try to run Mr. Snowden down. Both Thompson and Houston were very rude , talking over Mr. Snowden and not allowing him to finish his sentences.

I disagree. Snoweden is a person. He has done small things and also he has done some things that people disagree with.

WHAT has he done for our state?
  • by do your research on Oct 10, 2011 at 07:31 PM
Mr SNOWDEN HAS DONE MORE FOR OUR State than any other Representive we have had . .Often he is on Tv or wmox radio informing listener of what is going on .He has done so much for the City of Meridian and the State of Miss..If you dont know it you have not been listening . Mr Thompson has not done his home work .If he ( Mr Thompson ) hasnt done it before he not going to do it later. Mr Houston has not done his either or he just cant tell the truth .Mr Houston need to pull the voting records before he speaks otherwise it makes him sound very dishonest .

What has he done for the African American Community? What information has he made a special effort to give them? I did look at Mr. Snowden's record and he has not fully supported education nor does he support the African American voters in District 83! We need a representive that will look out for the best interest of All and Mr. Houston seemed to be focused on doing just that.

By "All" do you mean the African American Community? When is the African American Community going to do something for themselves, other than drive their $30k SUV with their 20" spinners, into their newly renovated project house garage and consume the drugs they pay for with the welfare and food stamp money they trade for at their uncle's store?

I am always amazed when people make such ignorant, generalizing statements. Is that really how you see the African American community? I am appalled at the stereotype you chose to attach to African Americans. I'm sure I could attach a couple of choice stereotypes to you as well, however I choose to believe that a couple of people don't define an entire race. To think that people still carry such mindsets around is truly disgusting and disheartening.

Are you from Africa? If NO, then you are NOT African-American, you are black. Then you do not have dual citizenship of 2 countries. This is NOT a hyphenated country it is ONE NATION UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE. Or, have you forgotten that part? Greg Snowden has done a lot for Mississippi, PERIOD. He has done a lot for all communities, not separating ANY particular community ~ unlike some candidates running who have personal reasons & agendas. REALLY? GET THE CHIP OFF YOUR SHOULDER. It's USAmerica 2011, not Africa, Mexico, India, Europe, Asia ~ you are black, a color, not a nation! You said it. It's a race. And, I agree with Tax Payer! Get out of the government housing & quit taking government tax dollars, then we'll talk COMMUNITY!
