Gary Houston Thursday announced that he's running as a Democrat for House of Representatives District 83.

Houston is the founder of the Youth Excitement Team in Meridian, which helps young people improve their educational skills.

The married father of three said he's concerned about health care and education, as well as unemployment and economic development.

"I believe that I can represent the people of Lauderdale and Clarke County with a listening ear," said Houston. "I want to make sure that our people are represented across the board in east Mississippi."

The District 83 seat is currently held by Republican Greg Snowden.

The primary election is Aug. 2. The general election is Nov. 8.
