Issues at Choctaw Tribal Council Meeting

The Choctaw Tribal Council met Thursday morning, and contrary to some rumors, the council did not choose to back off of having new elections for Chief and two Tribal Council Seats.

There was lots of chatter from the tribe members gathered in the audience, and from council members about the recently thrown out election, and the FBI investigation on the Pearl River Resort.

Miko Beasley Denson directly addressed the FBI investigation during the meeting, saying it is not clear exactly what the federal government is after, but then Vice-Chief Kevin Edwards held up what he said later was a copy of the FBI's search warrant.

"Kevin [Edwards], or [Chief candidate Phyllis Anderson], or [Tribal Council member Cyrus Ben], or no one else can call up to the FBI and say this is going on at the casino, and the judge just take their word for it," said Edwards following the meeting Thursday.

"There has to be something there, and that's the message that I want to get across to people they have to understand that."

Red Water Councilman Richard Issac also questioned an election commission employee during the meeting, asking why staff members from the Tribal Office had recently gone into the Elections Office for several hours.

No one commented, but Denson said a Tribal hearing could be called to discuss the issue.

We are scheduled to speak with Miko Beasley Denson Friday. On Thursday Choctaw public information officials did confirm that Denson will be on the ticket for the special election ordered by the Tribal Council.

That election will be open to all eligible candidates. Kevin Edwards confirmed Thursday that he will not try and run, and he will support Phyliss Anderson in the race.

Sounds like Helen is very angry about something which is obvious from the hostile comments. It is clearly evident you don't know me, nor have ever worked with me before. Whatever ill will you seem to be harboring, let it go because you cannot keep blaming others for your self-induced problems. I'm just like everyone else trying to survive & make a living on the rez for my kids. You don't know the road I've traveled & the sacrifices I've had to make to get to where I'm at today. You seem to be one who talks a big game but strikes out all the time when it comes to actually doing something. One things for certain, you are totally clueless on my ability to lead successful coworkers, teams, departments & organizations. The people whom I've had the privilege to work with whether tribal & nontribal, on & off reservation jobs can substantiate my abilities. I treat everyone with courtesy, respect until proven otherwise, & go to battle for them daily & am never afraid to speak my mind. You must think I've had an easy life. If so, sorry buddy but you're wrong again. I'm sure you had it rough. Everyone has but that's life. In your case, you probably give up, runaway & blame others. Realize we have a choice: You can either choose to fall flat on your face & give up or choose to get up & keep pushing forward til you get to your goals. Not sure what you're hoping to accomplish by trying to trash my character but before you label me look at yourself 1st. BTW, NO I am not running in the Sept election. The thought never crossed my mind. As far as your directive, I believe I am well qualified like everyone else to make my own decision on who to vote for in PR. Nice try though. Your turn to do us all a favor, next time use facts when you refer to me or others. Have a blessed day.

One things for certain, you are totally clueless on my ability to lead successful coworkers, teams, departments & organizations. The people whom I've had the privilege to work with whether tribal & nontribal, on & off reservation jobs can substantiate my abilities. Perhaps it is you who has never gone to battle for our people. Perhaps you are the one with no backbone skills but draw attention away from yourself by spewing false claims towards others. Chihowa challenges us all. That's life. In your case, you probably give up, runaway & blame others. Realize we have a choice: When you fall flat on your face you can stay down & give up or you can choose to get up & keep pushing forward til you get to your goal. I hope you choose the latter. • by Anonymous on Jul 25, 2011 at 11:10 AM
if you stupid chahtas went ahead and voted before the doors closed it would have been over on the 11. but nope just like the first election you waited till the last minute to cast your vote. so there its your fault. if you going to blame someone for putting no good leaders in office blame yourself. as for pointing fingers. look at the council too. tribal government transparency my ____, they wont have an open door even with a new chief. so why they want one now. most of them are guilty as with denson. i want a full inquiry on the council, office and every department of the tribe.

I'm not stupid. That line was long all day long. And no one was gonna deny my right to vote. A full inquiry of the council and every department? Where have you been all this time? You have access to your tribal council to get the information you need. Why are just now, during election time, paying attention to your government?

I don't think another election will solve anything at all. Beasley needs to just let go. He had 4 yrs to prove what he could 4 the tribe. We, the choctaw people, feel that it is time to move on and give phyliss a chance. You have put the tribe to shame long enough!! Greed is tearing our tribe apart, what are we teaching our younger generation? We are suppose to be teaching them to be proud of who they are. This election has caused nothing but hate towards each other. I just pray that is will be done and over with on Sept. 6!!!

This is something that the new chief really needs to consider once she is in office. I do agree with your last reply. I work and go to school to get ahead in life and here the administration has people that has a job handed down to them. It's not fair to us. The greed that is tearing the tribe apart is coming from beasley and his people. Yeah cut the chief and council's pay is something that we need to address as a tribe. If it was to happen then i wonder how many people would want to run then.

since no one on the council or chief office will not hear an honest, very hard working GOD fearing chahta. it is up to us to keep the rest informed of the both council and chief dealing and doings. they will make accusations against the honest and accept the dishonest.

Any comments on recent political mailings from Friends of Miko Beasley ?? It indicates that Phyllis only takes care of family, well, doesn't Denson have family on the payroll? Also, weren't there plans in place for new housing even before he was elected?

Plans are always underway for the Tribe. So what were the candidates platforms about? Housing? already in plan. Education? already new school in plan Health? already new hospital in plan. So what is left? Just people wanting handouts.

I visited the casino very often when Phillip Martin was in as chief because it was a nice place and the machines paid off occasionally like most casinos do.Ever since Miko took over the casinos have gone down big time. They will ever get a dime of my money again until some things change out there.Miko has ruined it.

Tribal Governmental gaming is regulated on three levels. Indian Nations are primary regulators of Indian gaming. Under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA), Tribes establish the basic regulatory framework for Indian gaming. State regulation may be included in Tribal/State compacts for Class III gaming. Federal agencies enforce laws relating to Indian gaming, including the National Indian Gaming Commission, the Interior Department, The Justice Department, FBI, IRS, Secret Service and the Treasury Department's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network Federal law makes it a crime punishable by up to ten years in prison to steal, cheat, or embezzle from an Indian gaming operation, and that law is enforced by the FBI 18 USC ss. 1163.
