One of the candidates running for Meridian mayor has been disqualified from the race by his own party.
The Lauderdale County Democratic Party sent a letter to Randle Jennings earlier this week Informing him that he has been disqualified from running in the mayoral primary.
Democratic Party leaders say they disqualified him because he owes the city $18,000 from a failed children's program he started.
Jennings only made a prepared statement Wednesday in response to his disqualification.
"Although I've been disqualified to run for Democratic candidate for mayor, God said he will liberate his people," said Jennings. "The Republican Party still must let the people go."
Jennings' disqualification leaves Rod Amos and Percy Bland as the only democrats in the race for Meridian mayor.
The primaries take place May 7. The general election is June 4.
