The Jimmie Rodgers festivities started bright and early Saturday morning with the talent competition, held in Dumont Plaza.
Organizers say there were a total of 70 performers from all over the state of Mississippi, singing gospel and country songs. Men and women of all ages were eligible to participate in the competition. Some big names have performed in the talent contest in year's past.
"You know, Elvis was here at one time in the contest at one time," talent show producer Richard Ferguson said. "Faith hill has been here in the talent contest. So, you never know which star is going to materialize and hopefully be a big name someday and they got their start right here at the Jimmie Rodgers Festival."
Organizers tell us the 8:00 a.m. start time made for a low turnout to start, but that the crowd grew throughout the day.
