Two suspects with ties to Lauderdale County are now facing motor vehicle theft charges in Kemper County. Both of the thefts have occurred within the last week. According to Sheriff James Moore, one of the suspects was arrested Wednesday in Meridian; prior to that the other was taken into custody in Alabama.
The first motor vehicle theft happened last Saturday. It involved a motorcycle. The accused in the case is 28-year-old Omarion Backstrom from Preston. Sheriff James Moore says Backstrom led deputies on a high speed chase through Scooba.
'Actually, the motorcycle operator ditched the motorcycle somewhere on Sanders Street in the city limits of Scooba. When that happened, the officer took to pursuit. When we got the motorcycle, it came back to be a stolen motorcycle out of Canton, Mississippi.'
Four days after the chase is when Backstrom was taken into custody while on the job in Meridian. He's now facing charges for fleeing and motor vehicle theft.
In a separate case, Sheriff James Moore says a chase which took place around 8 Monday night has now led to the arrest of a 17-year-old.
"It appeared that he was going to let the passenger out, but at that time he sped up and so the passenger fell out of the vehicle and into the road and that's when the officer had to deal with him. That's when the deputy lost site of the vehicle and then we later found out that he proceeded into Alabama on that same night and committed I think, a motor vehicle theft there or burglary, and got arrested."
Sheriff Moore says the teenage suspect is also thought have faced a similar charge in Lauderdale County. He's now being held in the Jefferson County, Alabama jail awaiting extradition. Moore says the teen is expected to be charged as an adult in Kemper County.
