Lauderdale County, Miss.
The Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department has received some new rifles.
The sheriff's department has been working on getting these guns for about a year. They will be used by members of the SWAT unit.
The LWRC 6.8 rifles were purchased through seized funds and community donations.
SWAT members qualified with those guns Wednesday.
Lauderdale County is the first agency in the nation to receive these rifles for use for by its SWAT members.
"As first responders, we periodically look at the weapons we carry, the ammunition we use, to make the best determination as to what will serve us best and serve our community best," said Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun.
Calhoun says these rifles will help the SWAT team be prepared in case it has to respond to a call where an individual may be armed with weapons that have high-capacity magazines.
