AT&T and city officials are encouraging young people to not text and drive.
Hundreds of students at Lamar High School saw a promotional video Thursday that demonstrated the dangers of texting while driving.
The National Safety Council says texting is responsible for 28% of traffic accidents.The average person takes their eyes off the road for 4.5 of every six seconds when texting.
"Today was a way to meet with high school students and show them the importance of not texting and driving, and hopefully, having them sign pledge cards and pledge sheets that they would not text and drive," said Carmichael.
Officials have designated Sept. 19 'Don't Text and Drive Day'.
